City of Springfield Aquatics Division Offering Lifeguard Training Courses

- Free Course and Certifications for Springfield Public Schools Students! -

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Director of Parks, Buildings and Recreation Management Thomas Ashe, and Aquatics Director Joseph Federico are pleased to announce that the City of Springfield Aquatics Division will once again be offering a Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course during both February and April school vacation weeks. Course participants will learn CPR, First Aid, AED, and Water Rescue Skills. Free certifications are also available for Springfield Public Schools students.

The February course will run from Tuesday, February 18th through Friday, February 21, 2025 from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Each one-week course will be held at the Milton Bradley Elementary School pool, 22 Mulberry Street, Springfield, MA 01105.  The training course is free for Springfield Public Schools students. Pre-registration is required and space is limited.

A PRE-COURSE SKILLS TEST will be held Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at 5:30 p.m. at Milton Bradley Elementary School pool.  Candidates must be prepared to pass the following:

  • SWIM 300 YARDS (12 lengths of a 25 yard Pool)
  • Surface dive to retrieve a 10 lb. object, & return to the surface
  • 2 Minute Tread without stopping and using your legs only

Mayor Sarno states, “We are thrilled to be able to offer this lifeguard training course for free to our Springfield Public Schools students during their school vacation week in February. Getting trained and certified early in the year can lead to great summer job opportunities as a certified lifeguard. I encourage our Springfield Public Schools students to explore this opportunity. Thank you to PBRM Director Ashe, Aquatics Director Joe Federico and our dedicated Aquatics team for their continued efforts throughout the year to provide safe, healthy, and fun aquatics facilities and programs.”

The program certifications are free for students of Springfield Public Schools. Cost for the program is $175.00 (cash or check only) per person for Springfield residents and $225.00 for non-City residents.  All fees must be paid by the first day of class.

The course is part of the Aquatics Division’s ongoing commitment to provide quality programming as part of the Department of Parks and Recreation.  Those interested in signing up must pre-register by calling the Aquatics office at (413) 787-6298.
