Springfield Public Schools (SPS) information addressing Immigration Concerns

At Springfield Public Schools (SPS), we are steadfast in our commitment to ensuring that every school-aged child residing in Springfield has access to a free public education, as guaranteed by state and federal law. We are dedicated to fostering safe and welcoming schools where students are empowered to learn and thrive and believe these rights apply to all children, regardless of their race, ethnicity, or immigration status.

We have been sharing detailed guidance and resources with school leaders to support them in addressing these matters with sensitivity and care. We continue to prioritize learning and safety across our schools. This includes working hand in hand with families to address their concerns, provide resources, and offer reassurance. School leaders have access to clear protocols to help navigate these situations, and our counseling team is committed to helping students and families manage the stress and anxiety they may be experiencing.

Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), SPS is prohibited from sharing personally identifiable student information with law enforcement or federal immigration enforcement agencies unless required by a court order or lawfully issued subpoena. In addition to following DESE guidelines, the district is taking proactive steps to safeguard student privacy and share local resources to ensure families feel supported.
