Mayor Sarno, Chief of Staff Bill Baker, current Police Superintendent Larry Akers, retired Police Superintendent Cheryl Clapprood, Parks Director Tom Ashe, Assistance Director of Recreation Randy Piteo, Springfield Police Supervisors Association leader Captain Brian Keenan and Springfield Police Patrolman's Union President Marty Curley joined with Wellpoint General Manager Dave Morales and team today as Wellpoint and Franklin Sports presented a $1,000 donation to support the Stephen O’Brien Memorial Learn-to-Skate Program.
Mayor Sarno states, “We are deeply grateful to my old friend David Morales and Wellpoint, and Frankling Sports, for their continued support of our long running Stephen O’Brien Memorial Learn-to-Skate Program – a wonderful program that connects our dedicated law enforcement with the youth and families in our community for such a positive experience of learning to ice skate. I am proud to join with our brave and dedicated men and women in blue and Wellpoint in our continued support of the Learn to Skate program to continue to honor the memory of Officer Stephen O’Brien. We have a great ice rink facility at Cyr Arena, now named in honor of retired police Superintendent Cheryl Clapprood who has been a tremendous supporter of the program and carrying on Officer O’Brien’s legacy of teaching children how to ice skate and having our officers out on the ice to connect with children to show they are positive role models for the youth in our community. I also want to thank our Parks, Buildings, and Recreation team now led by Director Tom Ashe for helping to make this excellent program happen for almost 30 years now.”
