Mayor Domenic J. Sarno issues a statement on the passing of Springfield native Richard J. Tyrell. Richard “Richie” Tyrell was selected as Springfield’s 2019 Veteran of the Year and previously served as the Chairman of the Springfield Veteran’s Activities Committee.
Mayor Domenic J. Sarno states, “I am so very sorry to hear about the passing of my friend and honored veteran ‘Richie’ Tyrell. My sympathy, thoughts, prayers, and encouragement go out to his wife Patty, family, and friends. Even though he was a U.S. Marine, a Vietnam Vet who was honored with 2 Purple Hearts, a Navy Commendation Medal, and the Vietnamese Cross for Gallantry, Richie was a humble and genuine veterans leader, who never looked for any fanfare and was a stalworth to help any veteran in need. May God rest your soul, Richie. Your suffering is over and now up in heaven you’ll be greeted with open arms by all our proud Veterans.”
