Mayor Sarno, Police Superintendent Akers, and City Councilors visit Indian Orchard Neighborhood to kick-off SPD Walking Patrols Initiative

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Police Superintendent Lawrence E. Akers joined with City Councilors and members of the Indian Orchard Citizens Council this morning at Myrtle Street Park to announce the Springfield Police Department’s (SPD) citywide walking patrol initiative.  This initiative is part of Superintendent Akers and SPD’s ongoing community engagement initiative.

Also joining today were our brave and dedicated police officers, including Captain Julio Toledo, along with City Councilors Lavar Click-Bruce, Kateri Walsh, Brian Santaniello, Jose Delgado and members of the Indian Orchard Citizens Council and youth council.

Mayor Sarno states, “Superintendent Larry Akers continues to bridge the gaps between our community and our brave and dedicated men and women in blue. We have heard from throughout the city, feedback supporting the return of walking patrols and are proud to announce this city-wide initiative. I am grateful to our City Councilors for their support of the walking patrols and advocacy for their neighborhood quality of life. We walked through the Indian Orchard neighborhood today with Supt. Akers and some of our officers and had great interactions with families, small businesses, pedestrians, and neighbors.  I deeply appreciate our SPD for being proactive and for taking the steps to continue to build community trust.”
