Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Chief Development Officer Tim Sheehan, and Housing Director Gerry McCafferty joined with Beacon Communities and city and state officials on Wednesday for a grand opening to celebrate major upgrades to 346 mixed-income units located at Baystate Place in Springfield.
The renovations by Beacon Communities to the complex that was originally built in 1974 include brand new kitchens and bathrooms and new flooring and windows in every unit, revitalized common areas and improvements to the life-safety systems. All units are designated for mixed-income families in Springfield. The City of Springfield contributed $300,000 in HOME funds to the project to support preservation of affordable housing for low and moderate-income families and individuals. Federal and state grants also supported the project.
State Representative Carlos Gonzales, City Councilor Maria Perez, Springfield Community Police Liaison Suehaley Arce, resident Toni Rivera, representatives from Beacon Communities, residents, families, and vendors also joined for the celebration.
Mayor Sarno stated, “As we all know, in our state and our City of Springfield, there is a desperate need for more housing options. My administration remains committed to proactive programs to both improve existing affordable housing and add more quality housing for our Springfield residents. Baystate Place has been upgraded with enhanced safety and accessibility as well as outdoor amenities which offers a beautiful oasis for residents to enjoy. I am grateful to my city team and our state and federal representatives for working to address the housing needs of our residents and look forward to our continued work together to improve and increase housing stock and ensure accessible and affordable options are available.”
