Mayor Sarno states, “First of all, congratulations to the 8th grade class at John J. Duggan Academy! Thank you to Principal Michael Calvanese, Associate Principal April Robinson and team and all teachers and staff for their dedication and support for our students. Congratulations to all the parents and families too – you have a new high schooler in the house and it is a time full of many exciting opportunities ahead.”

“I was recently with some of the 8th graders at Duggan to speak to Mr. Leone’s government and history class and we a very good discussion on effective decision making why it is so important to never give up on yourself or your goals and dreams. I am a proud product of our Springfield Public Schools, High School of Commerce graduate Class of 1981, and shared with these young and bright students my own personal experience growing up. I want to encourage them to continue to learn and advance their education be it in a college or university, a trade school, military service or opening their own business. The possibilities are endless and the sky is the limit for these bright and talented young minds. I am looking forward to celebrating this moment with our students as they continue to step upward on the education ladder toward success.”

Associate Principal April Robinson opened the program with remarks, while Mr. Johnathan Gill- Dean of Students- served as the master of ceremonies and Mr. Timothy Hurley awarding the diplomas and certificates to the students.

The Songstress of Springfield, who happens to be a proud alumna of Duggan Academy, Vanessa Ford preformed a heartfelt song to the faculty, staff, students and their families.

Mayor Sarno gave remarks to the soon to be 9th graders and touched on the social pressures that may come in high school quoting Booker T. Washington, “Associate yourself with people of good quality, for it is better to be alone than in bad company.”
