City of Springfield Commemorates Memorial Day

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno joined with Health and Human Services Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris, Director of Springfield Veterans’ Services Joe DeCaro, and the Springfield Veterans’ Services Department along with city and state officials for the city of Springfield’s annual Memorial Day Commemoration Ceremony with a program and honorary wreath laying ceremony at the Veterans’ Monuments located in Court Square.

Police Superintendent Larry Akers, Fire Commissioner BJ Calvi, State Senators Jacob Oliveira and Adam Gomez, Elianna Gutierrez on behalf of State Representative Carlos Gonzalez, City Councilors Tim Allen, Kateri Walsh, Lavar Click-Bruce, Brian Santaniello, and Jose Delgado, as well as Springfield’s Veteran Activity Committee Chairman Bill Walls, Sgt. Gumersindo Gomez, the Central High School JRROTC Honor Guard, and many veterans and supporters were also in attendance.  Melissa Boone performed the National Anthem.

Mayor Sarno states, “The City of Springfield is proud and honored to hold our annual Memorial Day Ceremony.  I want to thank Veterans’ Services Joe DeCaro and his dedicated staff for their continued efforts on behalf of our veterans. We want to acknowledge and honor the memory of our brave and dedicated veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms we enjoy today. Freedom is never free, and it is because of our veterans that we are the beacon of democracy, strength, hope, and opportunity. God Bless our veterans and God Bless the City of Springfield.”
