Smile, You’re on Springfield’s Candid Camera

Mayor Domenic Sarno and Executive Director of Parks, Buildings, and Recreation Management (PBRM) Thomas Ashe released details of the City of Springfield’s ongoing effort to curb illegal dumping throughout the city today.  PBRM has continued to maintain security cameras at multiple sites throughout the city that are used often for illegal dumping activity. Today, Mayor Sarno and PBRM Director Ashe joined with park officials, including members of the Clean City team, the Springfield Police Department, members of the McKnight Neighborhood Council and President Walter Kroll, City Councilors Melvin Edwards, Lavar Click-Bruce, and Malo Brown along with Park Commissioner Clinton Harris to share updates on illegal dumping.

The following people have been caught illegally dumping as part of this effort in the past year and were cited by the Springfield Police Department or Agawam Police Department:

• 1/17/2024 at 12:29 am- Issued citation to registered owner of m/v Geraldo Roland of 100 Wallace Street Springfield, MA.   

Mayor Sarno stated, “We are going to remain vigilant to ensure everyone understands illegal dumping will not be tolerated in the City of Springfield. We are continuing to monitor problem areas and violators should be aware we will catch up with you, so think twice. This program will remain a priority for my administration and we will provide the necessary resources to ensure all violators are prosecuted.”

Thomas Ashe added, “The Department of Parks, Buildings, and Recreation Management is committed to working closely with Springfield Police to eliminate blight caused by illegal dumping activities. I want to thank Tom McCarthy, Adam Anulewicz, Mike McCloskey, and the Springfield Police Department in their efforts to identify individuals illegally dumping in our city.

It is disturbing that residents and people from outside the city consider illegal dumping as an option. We will continue to expand the program and at the Mayor’s direction we will continue to monitor all sites and prosecute offenders. It is time that everyone realizes we have an affordable bulk pickup process and the rules need to be followed.”

From 2017 to 2024 the Springfield Parks Department along with the help of the Springfield Police Department and Agawam Police Department have caught and cited over 170 people for illegally dumping around the city. These citations total over $51,000.
