Mayor Sarno, Fire Commissioner Calvi, and East Springfield Neighborhood Thank Eastman for Donation of High-Tech, Portable Vitals Monitoring Equipment to the Springfield Fire Department

|   City News

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno joined with Fire Commissioner BJ Calvi, East Springfield Neighborhood Council President Kathy Brown and Eastman of Indian Orchard today at the Springfield Fire Headquarters for an announcement about Eastman’s donation of vital medical equipment known as oximeters, to the Springfield Fire Department (SFD). The SFD’s need for the oximeters was learned by Eastman at an Eastman Community Action Program gathering of local neighborhood and community officials sponsored regularly by Eastman Indian Orchard. This donation marks a significant and continued collaboration between Eastman, a global specialty manufacturing company with a plant in Indian Orchard, and the Springfield Fire Department, in serving the local community. The equipment being donated consists of 17 high-tech, portable oximeters, which are essential for monitoring vital signs in emergency situations.

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno is appreciative of Eastman Corporation for their continued support, belief and investment in the City of Springfield. He stated, “I am deeply appreciative of Site Manager Dennis Van Nevel and his team at Eastman for their continued support and offering to work with my Administration. Eastman Corporation, like many of our local businesses, have been a great corporate citizen.  Time and again Eastman has provided much-needed relief and assistance to our city, from donating much-needed PPES, providing over 1,000 desks for our SPS students during remote learning, to providing small business grants and donating traffic slow-down signals to our Indian Orchard and East Springfield Neighborhoods, and now through this generous donation to our SFD.” Mayor Sarno continued, “My Administration will continue to work together with Eastman as they continue to expand and enhance their own local operations and I again thank Mr. Van Nevel and his team for offering to help in any capacity that may be appropriate.”

Fire Commissioner Calvi states, “We are extremely grateful to the Eastman corporation for their generous gift; not only to the Springfield Fire Department but to the citizens of Springfield. With this new state of the art equipment, we will be able to continue to provide the highest quality First Responder care to the community.”

The oximeters being donated are advanced medical devices capable of accurately measuring blood oxygen levels and heart rates, crucial parameters in assessing a patient's condition during emergencies such as fires, accidents, or medical crises. These Concord models are rechargeable with large digital displays. 17 Pediatric finger clips are being donated alongside the oximeter units. These can be used to save the lives of children, including infants.

"We are honored to partner again with the Springfield Fire Department and provide this essential equipment that will aid their life-saving efforts. At Eastman, we are committed to good corporate citizenship and collaboration between the site and the local public safety officials,” said Dennis Van Nevel, Site Manager for Eastman Indian Orchard, Springfield. He went on, “Commissioner Calvi regularly attends the meetings after his workday. We ask the group to recommend what they feel the community needs. Commissioner Calvi told us of this need. We appreciate him for asking for these oximeters for Springfield’s residents and his fire fighters. As Mayor Sarno often says, our first responders are the first to rush into danger. We hope these oximeters will help save lives,” said Van Nevel.
