Mayor Sarno states, “I commend and thank our Parks, Buildings, and Recreation Management (PBRM) team for their ongoing excellent stewardship of our municipal golf courses. I know that PBRM Director Tom Ashe will continue the many great initiatives that started under retired director Patrick Sullivan. Our public golf courses are being nationally recognized and are quickly becoming a hidden jewel in the region, while also offering some of the most affordable rates in the area.  The investments and renovations made at both Franconia and Veterans have enhanced the quality of play for players of all ages and levels. Mass Golf recently chose our Veterans course to host two major USGA Qualifying events. This was the first time Veterans Memorial Golf Course had been chosen to host this qualifying event and follows a significant $1 million renovation program investment along with the city’s other municipal Franconia Golf Course.

PBRM Director Ashe stated, “Thanks to Mayor Sarno’s support, our municipal golf courses have stood out as popular courses both regionally and nationally.  The city of Springfield’s recent $1 million investment in the renovation of both of its municipal golf courses (Veteran’s Memorial and Franconia Golf Course) is already paying dividends.  I am grateful to our dedicated PBRM team here and for Mayor Sarno’s continued support as we gear up for another busy season at our Springfield golf courses.”

Did You Know?

Franconia Golf Course (Springfield, MA) was originally designed as a 27 hole golf course by famed architect Wayne Styles and associate John Van Kleek. The city of Springfield contracted Stiles in the summer of 1929 and 18 holes opened in early 1930. It is assumed that the additional 9 holes were not built for financial reasons.

From its beginnings, Franconia has always been financially friendly to golfers - charging just 50 cents per round when $2 was the going rate. With walking rates of just $29 on weekends, they haven't strayed from their affordable ethos.

Consider the fact that the city reinvested $1 Million into its golf courses in 2021, and its easy to see why many call Franconia municipal golf at its finest.
