Mayor Sarno states, “Congratulations to the Iron Workers Local 7 and all of those who have worked tirelessly to build this new civic center parking garage in the heart of our downtown. The speed in which this $80 million project has gone up is simply incredible. It has been amazing to watch the progress every day.”
“On behalf of the Iron Workers Local 7, we want to thank Mayor Sarno for his continued leadership and support not only on this important civic center garage project but for always looking out for our brothers and sisters in Labor. We are extremely proud to have participated on this project and look forward to working with the Sarno Administration on potential future projects too,” said Fiore Grassetti, Business Agent for Iron Workers Local 7.
Topping Off is the term used by ironworkers to indicate that the final piece of steel is being hoisted into place on a building, bridge, or other large structure. The project is not completed, but it has reached its maximum height. To commemorate this first milestone the final piece of iron is usually hoisted into place with a small evergreen tree (called a Christmas tree in the trade), an American flag and the Ironworkers banner displayed. It represents and celebrates the proud skills and talents of the dedicated ironworkers.
