City of Springfield Celebrates 38th Annual Black American Heritage with Special Flag Raising Ceremony

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and State Representative Bud Williams joined with city and state officials to celebrate the 38th Annual Black American Heritage with a special flag raising ceremony at City Hall on Thursday, February 1st. The event was emceed by Dr. Gloria Williams and featured Dr. Amilcar Shabazz as guest speakers. The prestigious Ruth B. Loving Civil Rights Award was presented to Bishop Dr. Bryant Robinson Jr. The golden voice of Springfield Vanessa Ford provided the musical selection and the event culminated with the raising of the African American Heritage flag on the front steps of City Hall.

Mayor Sarno, State Representatives Bud Williams and Carlos Gonzalez, City Councilor Lavar Click-Bruce, School Committeewoman Barbara Gresham, Robert 'Cee' Jackson, Police Commissioner and member of the 3rd Masonic District, and representatives from the Buffalo Soldiers provided remarks.

Mayor Sarno states, “The City of Springfield is proud to host our 38th Annual Black American Heritage Flag raising ceremony as we celebrate the rich diversity and mosaic that is our Springfield community.  We will also continue to honor the legacy of our local civil rights icon, Ruth B. Loving, through the presentation of an award named in her honor to a member of our greater Springfield community that strives to enhance and move our community forward with respect and equity for all.”
