Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Chief of Staff Tom Ashe welcomed new University of Massachusetts Amherst Chancellor Dr. Javier Reyes, and Lidya Rivera-Early, Executive Director of Government Relations and Springfield Partnerships today. Dr. Reyes became the 31st leader of UMass Amherst in July 2023. Chancellor Reyes, an economist who has devoted his career to enhancing public higher education, introduced himself to Mayor Sarno and reaffirmed UMass’s commitment to their satellite campus, UMass Springfield.

Mayor Sarno states, “It was great to meet with new UMass Amherst Chancellor, Dr. Javier Reyes, such a humble and knowledge individual with an impressive background in economics and the academia field.  Born and raised in Mexico, he is the first Hispanic to serve as chancellor of UMass Amherst.  It was also good to catch up with Lidya Rivera-Early.  She’s doing an excellent job at UMass after spending time as the director of community engagement at STCC.  I am looking forward to continuing to enhance our partnership with the UMass Springfield downtown campus for helping our Springfield public school students in pursuing their higher educational opportunities, to fostering community engagement and economic development / jobs initiatives.”
