The award from the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission is given to civilians for their extraordinary serving saving or attempting to save the lives of others. In December 2022, Perez was driving and witnessed a Springfield Police Officer struggling to arrest a robbery suspect. Perez did not hesitate and quickly pulled over to assist the officer. The suspect managed to grab the officer’s sidearm and fired it twice, hitting himself and Perez’s sweatshirt, before additional officers arrived and were able to control and arrest the suspect.

Thanks to his efforts, our officer, who was in a struggle to arrest the suspect wasn’t hurt, and a bad guy was taken off our streets. Congratulations and thank you!”
