Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Parks, Building and Recreational Management (PBRM) Director Patrick Sullivan joined with Jesse Menachem, Executive Director and CEO of Mass Golf, to thank and highlight the United States Golf Association (USGA) as they hold their 2023 USGA Qualifying for US Junior Amateur and US Girls’ Junior Amateur at Springfield’s Veterans Memorial Golf Course on Monday, June 26th. Mayor Sarno presented Mass Golf Executive Director and CEO Jesse Menachem with a special proclamation for holding this renowned event in Springfield.

Mayor Sarno states, “Director Patrick Sullivan and I are thrilled to host the USGA Qualifying for US Junior Amateur and US Girls’ Junior Amateur at Springfield’s Veterans Memorial Golf Course, which according to Mass Golf, was the fastest venue to sell out in the country, a testament to the $1 million my administration has invested into our municipal golf courses and the demand and love for golf in our region.  Our municipal golf courses of Veterans and Franconia are becoming nationally recognized as a hidden gem in the region and we are looking forward to hosting future events to showcase the great talent and skills of golfers from across the country.”

This is the 5th time Massachusetts has hosted the US Girls’ Junior Amateur with the most recent being held in 1995, when it was at the Longmeadow Country Club.  This is also the 5th time the State has hosted the US Junior Amateur with the most recent being held in 2005, also at the Longmeadow Country Club.  Players participating today were from across the country and from all across the globe.  Many of the players and their families have been staying in local hotels and patronizing local establishments.

PBRM Director Sullivan stated, “Thanks to Mayor Sarno’s support, our municipal golf courses are quickly becoming very popular and recognized both regionally and nationally.  The investment of $1 million worth of renovations at our public golf courses is the best example on why it is important to make these capital investments into our open spaces as it has a return of economic development where people will be staying in our hotels and dining at our local restaurants.  The investments and renovations made at both Franconia and Veterans have enhanced the quality of play for players of all ages and level, and I want to thank and congratulate our dedicated Greens Crews who do a phenomenal job in maintaining them.”
