Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Chief Development Officer Tim Sheehan joined with the D'Amour family for a special grand opening and “sandwich cutting” celebration at their newest Big Y Express location which is now open in Springfield’s downtown inside Tower Square. Rather than do a traditional ribbon cutting, Mayor Sarno and the Big Y team ceremoniously cut into a giant Big Y grinder to mark this special occasion.
In addition to many residents and neighboring businesses and organizations, State Representative Carlos Gonzalez, Western Mass Economic Development Director Rick Sullivan, Tower Square co-owner Vid Mitta were all in attendance.
Mayor Sarno states, “For decades the city has strived to bring a grocery store to our downtown neighborhood area. I am proud that my administration has been able to accomplish this initiative, working with our iconic Big Y, to enhance more amenities for our downtown residents and businesses. I want to thank the well-respected Big Y and D’Amour family for their continued belief and investment in our Springfield. They’re great corporate citizens.”
“The feedback from stopping in to check it out has been simply tremendous. Residents came up and thanked me. They are thrilled to be able to now have a place where they can purchase their groceries and our downtown workers have a place to grab a quick lunch and other needs for their respective offices and business locations. This development project is a huge win for our City!” said Mayor Sarno “I was also happy to see that some of the workers at the Big Y Express Downtown were downtown residents too. This project continues to be a major boost for our city, creating more of that good four-letter word – JOBS!”
