Mayor Sarno Reads to 5th Grade Students at Mary A. Dryden Veterans Memorial School as part of Read Across America Day

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno joined with the 5th grade students at Mary A. Dryden Veterans Memorial School today to read one of Mayor Sarno’s favorite books, ‘A Home Run for Bunny’ by Richard Andersen, as part of Read Across America Day.

Mayor Sarno states, “I want to thank Principal Theresa Carrie and Mrs. Maureen Manos for inviting me to participate in their read aloud as part of Read Across America Day and Mrs. Peg Sullivan for welcoming me today to the class.  I was honored to be with the 5th graders at Dryden school and read one of my favorite books, ‘A Home Run for Bunny’ by Richard Andersen, a true story about a Springfield baseball team from 1934 that took a stand for equality, sportsmanship, loyalty and friendship. What do you know – Principal Carrie’s uncle, the late Judge Danie Keyes, was a member of the American Legion Post 21 Baseball team depicted in the book and one of the students also had a direct family connection to this true Springfield story about how a team took a stand for equality when their friend and teammate faced racial discrimination.”

“The students and I also had conversations about what’s its like being a mayor and how important reading and education is for any career path. I know many of them will go on to further their education and become teachers, doctors, athletes, business owners and more.  There is no limit to what they can accomplish and as the humble Mayor for the City of Springfield who was educated right here at our public schools; my administration will continue to do what we can to make sure that our youth have the skills and opportunities to succeed in life.”
