Temporary Closure Notice of CT River Walkway Bridge

|   City News

The City of Springfield Department of Public Works (DPW) was recently notified by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) of a structural issue related to the elevated section of the Connecticut River Bikeway that spans over the CSX rail line from West Springfield, just north of the Memorial Bridge.

Based upon the MassDOT inspection, the City, out of an abundance of caution, is issuing an immediate notice of the temporary closure of the Connecticut River Walkway Bridge to all traffic due to the structural deficiencies.  The DPW will be installing the necessary barriers today, Friday, February 24, 2023, to close the section of the walkway.

MassDOT had previously inspected a portion of the bridge last year and the conditions did not exist.  This indicates that the structural deficiencies and issues happened over this winter period as a result of the cold weather freeze thaw cycle.

The DPW will review the reports from MassDOT and complete all of the necessary additional inspections to remedy the situation.  Until these repairs are made the CT River Walkway Bridge will be closed until further notice.
