Mayor Sarno Joins with Department of Elder Affairs for Black History Celebration and Black Inventions Exhibit at Raymond A. Jordan Senior Center

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno joined with Health and Human Services Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris and Elders Affairs Director Sandy Federico, the Elder Affairs team, and many of our Springfield seniors today at the Raymond A. Jordan Senior Center for a Black History Month celebration and Black Inventions Museum Exhibit.

Mayor Sarno states, “It was, once again, great to be with our seniors and their smiles warmed my heart. I was so pleased to announce last week, along with Councilor Tim Allen, as we move towards post-COVID, that we were able to bring back hot lunches – our seniors were so appreciative. Lastly, with the old-school music being played by “DJ Groove” I was even able to get some dancing in too!

The Black Inventions Museum Exhibit is open to the public and residents, young and old, are invited to see the incredible inventions we use today, which Black inventors created.  They were the pioneers who paved the way for how we utilize everyday creations such as the traffic light, answering machine, pencil sharpener, and more. This very special presentation will be on exhibit from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, Wednesday, February 8th and again Thursday, February 9th, 2023.

For today’s celebration, Andrew Cade from the Urban League of Springfield joined as the Master of Ceremonies, Carol Gasque gave blessings before the hot lunch was served to our seniors, and Vanessa Ford and Michelle Brooks Thompson performed gospel songs. City Councilors Tim Allen and Justin Hurst were also in attendance.

Community partners from the Urban League of Springfield, Black Springfield COVID-19 Coalition were on site to offer free COVID-19 vaccines and boosters. They will also be offering COVID-19 vaccines and boosters tomorrow, Thursday, February 9th, (both Moderna and Pfeizer,) from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

For more information, please call (413) 787-6785.  The Raymond A. Jordan Senior Center is located at 1476 Roosevelt Avenue, Springfield, MA. The program is free and open to the public and will be on display tomorrow from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm
