|   City News

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno welcomed a visit from Dr. Kamal Ali, Founder and Trustee of the Islamic Society of Western Massachusetts (ISWM) and Professor Emeritus from Westfield State University – Mayor Sarno’s alma mater. Chief of Staff Tom Ashe and Mayoral Aide Shenell Ford were also in attendance.

Mayor Sarno stated, “It is always good to sit down and welcome my old dear friend, Dr. Kamal Ali, who grew up here and still residents here in Springfield.  Dr. Ali is such a good, kindhearted and down to earth gentleman.  A strong interfaith leader and someone who I affectionately and respectfully call him the Godfather of Urban Education program at Westfield State University, which allowed our urban youth to continue their pursuit of their education and career path.  He, Imam Shaikh Wissam Abdul Baki, along with Mohammad Dastigir, President of the Islamic Society of Western Mass, and the members of the Islamic Society of Western Massachusetts do such a tremendous job for our Muslim community.  I am looking forward to working with Dr. Ali in future events and supporting the mission of the ISWM as it strives to build constructive and respectful relationships with all peoples, no matter their faith.”
