Central Golden Eagles Rank First in the State

The Massachusetts high school football season gets underway with the Springfield Central Golden Eagles soaring in the top Division 1 spot, according to information released today by the Massachusetts Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

“Congratulations to Coach Watson, the entire coaching staff, Principal Tokarz, Athletic Director Early, and most importantly, the players of the Central football team,” said Superintendent of Schools Daniel Warwick. “We are so proud of the accomplishments these students achieve both on field and in the classroom.”

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno stated: “Congratulations to the players, Coach William Watson, Athletic Director Dwayne Early and all the coaches, staff, teachers, and families. This is a tremendous accomplishment.  Superintendent Daniel Warwick and I are so very proud and excited that their hard work and accomplishments are being recognized.  Once again, Central continues to prove that they are the ‘Home of Scholars and Champions!’”

The Central Golden Eagles football team, which entered the Division 1 ranking in 2021, has held the state championship title for three years in a row.

Springfield Public Schools Athletic Director Dwayne Early said the caliber of rivals the Golden Eagles elect to play early in the season speaks to the team’s hunger and drive. So far this season, the 2-1 Golden Eagles have played Central Catholic, Boston College High School and St. John’s of Washington D.C.

“St. John’s for example, is ranked 24th in the nation and our Golden Eagles played a great game against them,” said Early. “It’s a testament to the coaching staff, and especially Head Coach William Watson. The whole outfit welcomes the challenge because they know ‘metal sharpens metal.’”

Early said he is looking forward to the rest of the season for the Central Golden Eagles and all of the Springfield Public Schools sports teams. “We wish all of them good health and the best of luck.”
