Mayor Sarno Joined with Superintendent Warwick to Bring Welcome Remarks at the New Educator Orientation

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno joined with Superintendent Daniel Warwick to provide welcome remarks to new Springfield Public Schools teachers and staff at the new educator orientation Zoom meeting today. It was a very special one for Mayor Sarno too – for his youngest daughter Chiara now joins the ranks as an educator too!

Mayor Sarno states, “Superintendent Dan Warwick and I want to thank and congratulate our new and returning teachers.  Teaching is an honorable profession filled with individuals who have a love and passion for educating young minds and helping our children grow.  Our Springfield Public Schools have made great and positive strides since I took office as Mayor.  In 2011, our city’s graduation rate was just 52.1% and the dropout rate was at 11.7%.  I am proud to state, by working together, our graduation rate is now 86% and our dropout rate is now 1.9% -- the highest improvements in the State.  This monumental change is a result of hard work and dedication thanks to the Superintendent of Schools and SPS staff, our principals, teachers, students and their families and the School Committee.  In addition, working with the Massachusetts School Building Authority, we have invested over $700 million in renovations and new school construction throughout the City, again the most in the Commonwealth.  Together, I am looking forward to working with all of our dedicated Springfield Public Schools teachers, staff and families as we continue to make the City of Springfield a great place to live and work.”

“Teachers you make dreams and goals come through by making our students believe that a zip code will not dictate their futures. You create a path that they can and will succeed,” Mayor Sarno added.  “Thank you! Good health and continued success!”
