Mayor Sarno Joins Councilor Govan for Launch of Mental Health Check-in Days in Court Square

Mental Health Check-in Days are planned for the third Wednesday of the month for the rest of the summer.

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno joined with Springfield City Councilor Zaida Govan for the launch of the Mental Health Check-in Days series taking place this summer throughout Springfield. The first Mental Health Check-in Day was held on Wednesday, June 29th from 11:00am – 3:00pm at Court Square in downtown Springfield. Also joining on Wednesday were a number of mental health service providers as well as State Representative Orlando Ramos and City Councilor Kateri Walsh.

This summer, the Springfield City Council’s Mental Health Subcommittee, chaired by Ward 8 Councilor Zaida Govan, in collaboration with the Gandara Center, the Mental Health Association, Baystate Health, and the Stop Access Drug Free Communities Coalition is offering community Mental Health Check-in Days in Springfield on the third Wednesday of the month.  All are invited to come check in on your own mental health and connect to community resources.

Mayor Sarno states, “Almost all of us know someone who is affected with a mental health issue – this touches all of us regardless of our background. Mental health, like physical health, is part of being human and seeking help when we struggle not something to be ashamed of. Thank you Councilor Govan and our dedicated partners at Gandara, MHA, and Baystate for making these mental health resources accessible to our community and continuing to work to reduce stigma around talking about mental health. If you’re interested in a check-in or getting connected to more resources I hope you’ll come down to Court Square on Wednesday.”

Councilor Govan states, “The committee wants to normalize mental health and give it a positive connotation about taking care of your mental health.”
