Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Congressman Richard E. Neal and city officials joined with Home City Development, Inc. today for a special ribbon cutting ceremony at the new Elias Brookings Apartments. The development transforms the former and historic school into 42 new apartments. The three-story building was used as a public school from 1926 until it was damaged by the 2011 tornado in Springfield.

Housing Director Gerry McCafferty, State Senator Adam Gomez, State Representatives Bud Williams, Orlando Ramos and Carlos Gonzalez, City Council President Jesse Lederman and Councilors Melvin Edwards, Tim Allen, Tracye Whitfield and Attorney Michael Fenton and Principal Terry Powe were also in attendance.

Mayor Sarno states, “I want to thank Congressman Neal, who once a mayor always the heart of a mayor, and the Baker-Polito Administration, especially MassHousing Executive Director Chrystal Kornegay and Tom Kegelman from Home City Development, for their continued support in working with the City of Springfield to create quality housing options and economic development opportunities.  This project continues my administration’s efforts of creating positive and transformational initiatives and projects to create good stable housing and that good four letter word, JOBS! – especially a long our Central Street corridor area.”
