City of Springfield Holds Memorial Day Ceremony

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and the Springfield Veterans’ Services Department held the annual Memorial Day Commemorative Ceremony with a program on the front steps of City Hall and honorary wreath laying ceremony at the Veterans’ Monuments located in Court Square.

Members from the Veterans Activities Committee as well as Health and Human Services Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris, Veterans' Services Director Tom Belton, Veterans' Services Deputy Director Joe DeCaro, Fire Commissioner BJ Calvi, Police Superintendent Cheryl Clapprood, Human Resource and Labor Relations Director Bill Mahoney, City Councilors Zaida Govan, Tim Allen and Jesse Lederman, State Representative Jacob Oliveira, and Ayanna Crawford from Representative Orlando Ramos Office and Jennifer Metsch from Senator Eric Lesser's Office were in attendance.  

Bishop William Byrne provided the opening prayer and members from the Central High School Air Force JROTC, High School of Commerce Army JROTC and Sci Tech Navy JROTC presented the colors.   

Mayor Sarno states, “The City of Springfield is proud and honored to hold our Memorial Day Ceremony.  I want to thank Veterans’ Services Director Tom Belton, Deputy Director Joe DeCaro and their dedicated staff for their continued efforts on behalf of our veterans.  We want to acknowledge and respect our veterans, who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect the freedoms we enjoy today and honor the memory of our brave and dedicated veterans.  Freedom is never free, as we are witnessing the tragedy in Ukraine.  God Bless our veterans and God Bless the City of Springfield.”
