Help ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ on May 14th – National Association of Letter Carriers to Hold Largest One-day Food Drive in the Country –

For more than 20 years, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) has conducted an annual nationwide food drive on the second Saturday in May. This year, it falls on Saturday, May 14, 2022. THE NALC, in conjunction with the United States Postal Service will collect non-perishable food items to benefit local food pantries that distribute food to our neighbors in need.

Postal patrons are asked to leave food items by their mailboxes on Saturday May 14^th to be picked up by their Letter Carrier for distribution to food pantries right here in our community.

Using the unparalleled postal networks, letter carriers collect non-perishable food donations on that Saturday as they deliver mail along their postal routes. All major cities and towns in Western Mass with unformed Letter Carriers will be participating in the drive. In addition, 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam will join for this year’s 29^th annual Food Drive. Among the many local volunteer groups that will help are the United Way, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, National Guard units, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Boy/Girl Scouts, various student groups, Rotary Clubs and AARP groups.

“Many people in this country struggle with hunger every day,” NALC President Fredric Rolando said. “We are honored to be able to help people in need by leading an effort that brings out the best in so many Americans. Six days a week, letter carriers see first-hand the needs in the communities where we work, and we’re committed to helping meet those needs.” For more than a decade, the drive has annually collected more than 70 million pounds of food. Over the course of its history, the food drive has collected 1.4 billion pounds of food to help feed our neighbors.

Mayor Domenic J.  Sarno stated, “First, I want to thank the devoted letter carriers who serve our community for what they do 6-days a week, and for going above and beyond to Stamp Out Hunger. They have established a very simple and convenient way to give back. The little things can go a long way and I encourage everyone to do what they can to support this effort on Saturday, May 14^th.”
