Mayor Sarno and City Officials Joined with the Springfield St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee to Raise the Irish Flag for St. Patrick’s Day

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and city officials joined with the Springfield St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee and family, friends and neighbors to celebrate Irish Heritage with a morning St. Patrick’s Day Mass at Sacred Heart with Bishop William Byrne, followed by the raising of the Irish flag on the front steps of City Hall.

Joining Mayor Sarno was Bishop William Byrne, City Councilors Kateri Walsh, Attorney Sean Curran, Attorney Michael Fenton, Tim Allen and Jesse Lederman, School Committee Vice Chairman Chris Collins, State Senator Adam Gomez, State Representatives Bud Williams and Jacob Oliveira, Hampden County Register of Deeds Cheryl Coakley-Rivera, Register of Probate Rosemary Saccomani, Police Superintendent Cheryl Clapprood, Fire Commissioner BJ Calvi, Superintendent of Schools Daniel Warwick, Human Resources and Labor Relations Director Attorney William Mahoney, Veterans Affairs Director Tom Belton, Veterans Affairs Deputy Director Joe DeCaro, Executive Director of Parks, Buildings and Recreation Management Patrick Sullivan, Ayanna Crawford from Representative Orlando Ramos’s Office and Mayor Sarno’s Chief of Staff Tom Ashe and Communications Director Bill Baker.        

Also in attendance were some of the Springfield St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee Awardees including Parade Marshall Sean Cahillane, John & Agnes Burke Award winner Kerri Sullivan, Paul Caron Award winner Maura Troy Cournoyer, Mary B. Troy Appreciation Award winner Stephen Lewis and the Springfield Colleen Colleen Curley and her Court Maeve Shea, Marah McDonnell, Grace McCarthy and Danielle Buoniconti.    

Mayor Sarno states, “I want to thank our Springfield St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee for keeping our Irish heritage and traditions strong.  Irish-Americans have truly enriched our City of Springfield, our Commonwealth and Nation.  I truly enjoy celebrating St. Patrick’s Day as Mayor Domenic J. ‘O’Sarno’.  Again, congratulations to all the award winners, our Springfield Colleen, and her court.  I am looking forward to marching in the St. Patrick’s Day parade on Sunday with our Springfield Police Department contingent.”

Following the flag raising, Mayor Sarno, City Councilors Michael Fenton, Tim Allen and Jesse Lederman, and Elder Affairs Director Sandy Federico visited with the seniors at the Hungry Hill Senior Center with Hungry Hill Neighborhood Council President Cathy Mossi and Hungry Hill Senior Center Coordinator Linda Henley for their annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration.
