The new $240 million building, which began construction in 2019, includes numerous nods to MassMutual’s founding in Springfield. For instance, there is a room numbered 1851, the year MassMutual was founded, that pays tribute to their beginnings in Springfield. Additionally, the carpet and lighting on each of the floors are positioned at an angle where they are always pointing to the company’s home in Springfield. Approximately 1,000 MassMutual employees will be working out of this new facility overlooking Boston Harbor. MassMutual also reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining their presence in Springfield, as they announced back in 2019, they will be adding 1,500 jobs to their Springfield headquarters by the end of 2021.
Mayor Sarno states, “I want to thank MassMutual Chairman, President and CEO Roger Crandall and his team for inviting myself and my city team to the grand opening of their new facility in Boston’s Seaport District and let me tell you, what a view overlooking Boston’s Seaport District and Boston Harbor. The office spaces and amenities are terrific and state-of-the-art and I truly appreciate the homage paid to our City of Springfield.”
“For 170 years, MassMutual has been an economic and innovated driver in the City of Springfield and Western Massachusetts,” Mayor Sarno continued. “I also appreciate MassMutual Chairman, President and CEO Roger Crandall for reaffirming his company’s commitment to the City of Springfield through this expansion process. This investment and expansion into Eastern Massachusetts is a natural progression of MassMutual’s development and I know we are all looking forward to working together with all of our public and private partners as we move our City of Springfield and the Commonwealth forward and reinvigorate our local economy post-pandemic. This is a good day for not only Boston, but for Springfield and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.”
