Mayor Sarno Joined with American Medical Response for Earn While You Learn Graduation at MGM Springfield

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Fire Commissioner BJ Calvi joined with American Medical Response (AMR) Northeast Regional Director Patrick Pickering and AMR officials for their 5th Commencement of the Earn While You Learn program at the Roar Comedy Club at MGM Springfield. The graduating class is made up of 18 individuals, with 12 being Springfield residents. With this class, AMR now proudly has a staff of 350 paramedics.

Mayor Sarno states, “I am very appreciative of AMR’s continued belief, support and investment in our Springfield.  This continues to be what my administration is all about, that good four letter word ‘JOBS’ – creating more jobs for our residents and their families.  It was also great to see that one of the graduates was straight out of our Springfield High Schools.  Not only was she studying hard to graduate as EMT but she was also working hard to get her driver’s license – now that is dedication and commitment to excelling.  This young lady has a bright future and we wish her and all of the graduates nothing but continued success.  In addition, I am truly grateful to AMR’s unyielding support and partnership, especially during the ongoing COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic.  Congratulations to all of the new EMT’s and congratulations to AMR for their 5th Earn While You Learn commencement.”

“I also want to give a shout out and thank MGM Springfield for hosting today’s graduation ceremony at their Roar Comedy Club, which was once my old South End Community Center building,” Mayor Sarno added.  “I must admit, from my old days as the Executive Director for the South End Community Center, MGM did a wonderful job preserving this beautiful building and reutilizing it into their footprint.”

First launched in August 2019, the Earn While You Learn Program is designed to make an easier transition for those wanting to become EMS professionals.  Participants are hired as employees and compensated while attending AMR’s EMT-Basic certification course.  Upon successful completion of the program and obtaining their state certification, participants are promoted to EMT-B with a commensurate pay increase.

In addition to the Earn While You Learn graduation event, AMR’s Manager of Communications and Operations Patrick Leonardo is celebrating his 25th Anniversary with AMR this year.  To mark this occasion, Mayor Sarno presented Patrick with a proclamation declaring Wednesday, September 15, 2021 as ‘Patrick Leonardo Day’ in the City of Springfield.  Congratulations to Patrick and the entire AMR family.
