City of Springfield Holds Shot for Shot Basketball Event and Vaccination Clinic

On Saturday, July 17, 2021, Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Health and Human Services (HHS) Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris and the Springfield Vax Force held a Shot for Shot Vaccination Basketball Tournament as part of the City's continued vaccination outreach initiatives. The event was sponsored by the City of Springfield’s Department of Health and Human Services in partnership with the Travis Best Foundation.

In an effort to continue to help educate our citizens, especially our youth, about the COVID-19 Coronavirus and the vaccine, the City of Springfield Department of Health and Human Services and the Travis Best Foundation hosted the first of a two-part basketball tournament in Forest Park.  While the basketball tournament is happening, the Department of Health and Human Services had a vaccination tent stationed that helped vaccinate residents ages 12 and older.  The teams emerging from the first round of the tournament will compete again roughly 21 days later when it’s time to administer the second doses.

Mayor Sarno states, “I commend Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris, our Vax Force, Coach Darryl Denson, and native son Travis Best and the Travis Best Foundation for their continued creative efforts to reach our young adults and youth population through this Shot for Shot Hoop Events.  As I’ve stated before and as the Doobie Bros would sing – ‘we’re taking it to the streets.’  This continues our efforts to target our 18-35 year old population, which has been lagging on getting the vaccine shot.  We have also ramped up in vaccinating our students working with Superintendent Dan Warwick and Nursing Director Jeanne Clancy.”

HHS Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris stated, “To continue to successfully mitigate the potential community spread of the COVID-19 Coronavirus it is critical that we work collaboratively to vaccinate and reach out to our younger population which has been lagging in our vaccination rates.  I want to thank Mayor Sarno, the Springfield Vax Force, my dedicated HHS team, the Travis Best Foundation and especially Coach Darryl Denson for leading this outreach effort to make sure our youth are educated and vaccinated.  This Shot for Shot event is a positive platform to help with our educational and outreach vaccination initiatives while at the same time enjoying these summer days with some fun on the basketball court.”
