Springfield Public Schools Portrait of a Graduate

For nearly two years, Springfield Public Schools has engaged the community to help build a Portrait of a Graduate – a vision of the skills and attributes SPS students need to find success in college and career. Community input has been a vital component of the process, which will ultimately guide the creation of the district’s Strategic Plan for 2021 and beyond, said Superintendent of Schools Daniel Warwick.

Warwick said the development approach for the district’s newest Strategic Plan is unlike anything in the past. “We are intentionally looking to expand the thought process around what success looks like for our students,” said Warwick. “We are drilling down past test scores and policies and talking about the attributes that schools need to help foster to set students up for success.”

Warwick said SPS students’ rate of academic improvement is the highest in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, but he emphasized that the achievement gap still exists. The Portrait of a Graduate process will provide an opportunity to outline the community’s values, align work that’s already in place throughout the district, bridge existing gaps, and guide future decision-making, he said.

“We cannot rest on our laurels and we must work even harder to make more gains,” said Warwick. “I know the community will contribute greatly to the future success of our students.”

SPS Portrait of a Graduate work is supported by a grant from the Barr Foundation. Based in Boston, Barr focuses regionally, and selectively engages nationally, working in partnership with nonprofits, foundations, the public sector, and civic and business leaders to elevate the arts, advance solutions for climate change, and connect all students to success in high school and beyond.
