Mayor Sarno Joins Spirit of Springfield for World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast Announcement

District Attorney Anthony Gulluni Named 2021 Chairperson.

Springfield’s annual World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast is back after being postponed during the COVID-19 pandemic.  The Spirit of Springfield will host the World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast, sponsored by MGM Springfield, on Saturday, August 21, 2021. Mayor Domenic J. Sarno joined with the Spirit of Springfield today, as they announced Hampden County District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni as the 2021 World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast Honorary Chair. 

Springfield’s annual flapjack feast, postponed from May 15, 2021, will be held Saturday, August 21, 2021, from 8am to 11am on Main Street from State Street to Bridge Street.  Admission to the event, beverages, and activities are free.  Breakfast of pancakes and bacon is $3 and free for anyone 18 or younger. 

Mayor Sarno stated, “The World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast is back! I am thrilled that we are now able to hold this record-breaking event that we look forward to with the Spirit of Springfield every year,” said Mayor Domenic J. Sarno.  “The pancake breakfast has become a favorite Springfield tradition and also draws thousands of people from throughout the region to our downtown. We can now safely come together to celebrate after much hard work and patience over the last year. I look forward to the scent of maple syrup in the air seeing bright smiles throughout our downtown Springfield once again.”

Mayor Sarno joined with Spirit of Springfield President Judy Matt, District Attorney Gulluni, MGM Springfield Community Outreach Manager Beth Ward, Springfield Thunderbirds President and 2019 World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast Honorary Chair Nathan Costa, World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast Chair Peter Lappin, Health and Human Services Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris, Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood, Fire Commissioner BJ Calvi, along with sponsors, supporters, and volunteers today.  Nathan Costa presented District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni with his official Spirit of Springfield jacket as he passed along the honorary chairperson title to DA Gulluni.

Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni stated, “Growing up in Springfield, I have fond memories of attending the World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast with my dad. It is an honor to be named Honorary Chair and be a part of this year’s breakfast, especially as it returns to downtown Springfield after the pandemic. I hope many families from the region create their own memories and join me at the famous World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast in downtown Springfield on August 21.

For decades, the Spirit of Springfield has brought the community together with iconic events like the Parade of Big Balloons, Bright Nights at Forest Park, and the 4th of July Star Spangled Springfield,” said Chris Kelley, President & COO MGM Springfield.  “This August, MGM is thrilled to be part of the return of the World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast.  Congratulations to District Attorney Gulluni on being named the chair of this year’s event!”

In addition to MGM Springfield, the World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast is supported by the generous donations from area businesses including Baystate Health, Bimbo Bakeries and Entenmanns, Cabot Creamery, Costco, Elegant Affairs, Gleason Johndrow Landscaping, Hampden County Sheriff’s Department, H.P. Hood, Mansfield Paper Company, MassMutual Center, Mercy Medical Center, Performance Foodservice, Quality Beverage, Republic Services, Sheraton Springfield, Smithfield Packaged Meats, Springfield Business Improvement District, Springfield Parking Authority, as well as the Springfield Police, Fire, Parks, and Public Works Departments.

“We have been waiting more than two years to serve the World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast and honor Hampden County District Attorney Anthony Gulluni,” said Judy Matt, Spirit of Springfield President.  “We have received an overwhelming response from sponsors, donors, and volunteers.  It is clear that the community is eager to celebrate and come together for the World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast.”

Cooking, serving, selling tickets and keeping the tables clean will be hundreds of volunteers representing 94.7 WMAS, Armoury Quadrangle Civic Association, Baystate Charter Academy, Bethel Child Care Services, Law Office of Maurice Powe, SATCO (PVTA), Sincyr Designs, Springfield Code Enforcement/Building Division, Springfield Thunderbirds, Springfield UNICO, The Q 99.7, United States Postal Service, Western Mass News, Western Mass. Square Round Dance Association, United Way of Pioneer Valley, Springfield Department of Health and Human Services, and more.

“It has been an honor to represent the World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast, and special thanks to Judy and her team,” said Nathan Costa. “The Spirit of Springfield couldn’t have picked a better honorary chairman for this year’s event. I want to wish District Attorney Gulluni well in his very important duties of flipping pancakes.  It's truly a great experience.”

Also participating in the 2021 World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast will be Pellegrini, Seeley, Ryan & Blakesly PC, WWLP-22News, Massachusetts Army National Guard, BMC HealthNet Plan, businesses and community service organizations promoting their services, and Grisel’s Private Dance School of Arts, which will be performing.
