Mayor Sarno and City Officials Joined with Spirit of Springfield for a Star Spangled Springfield Announcement

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, Health and Human Services Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris, Executive Director of Parks, Buildings, and Recreation Management Patrick Sullivan, Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood, Fire Commissioner BJ Calvi, and city officials joined with the Spirit of Springfield President Judy Matt, Spirit of Springfield Board Members Chair Attorney Melinda Phelps and Clerk Kathy Tobin, and MassMutual Foundation President Dennis Duquette for the formal announcement that on Sunday, July 4, 2021, the City of Springfield will be celebrating Independence Day with a Star Spangled Springfield on the Riverfront Park.

The Independence Day festivities will begin at 6:00 pm with face painters and balloon artists, and musical performances.  There will be food vendors and the splash pad will be operating to keep the kids cool.  Maxxtone, a Springfield-based band known for their ability to perform an array of contemporary songs, will perform at 7:00 pm, followed by Fireworks by Grucci pyrotechnic wizardry at 9:30 pm.  The fireworks, launched from the Memorial Bridge, will dance to music broadcast in Riverfront Park and on Mix 93.1 FM.

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno states, “It’s time.  Much as we did only weeks after the devastating EF-3 Tornado of June 1, 2011, our 4th of July fireworks display showed the resiliency, hope, faith, and strength of our residents and business community of Springfield.  Many thanks to the Spirit of Springfield President Judy Matt, all our generous benefactors, especially MassMutual and my City Departments.  Again, it’s time to move forward in a smart way as we defeat this COVID-19.  You can’t put a price tag on the morale boost this will give our Springfield and Western Massachusetts.”

“For over a decade, we have been a proud sponsor of Springfield’s Fourth of July festivities,” said Dennis Duquette, Head of Community Responsibility at MassMutual. “We are excited that this world-class event is returning to our home city so that the community and families from across the region can enjoy this spectacular celebration.”

“We are grateful to have the opportunity to present the Independence Day festivities.  We all need to be with our family, friends, and neighbors, and feel a part of this great community,” said Judy Matt.  “The Spirit of Springfield is also grateful for the support from MassMutual, our partnership with the City of Springfield, and the contributions from so many others that make July 4th a Star Spangled Springfield.”

Star Spangled Springfield is sponsored by MassMutual.  It is also made possible with support from iHeart Radio (Mix 93.1 FM), MassLive, The Republican, and WWLP-22News.  In-kind donors include 90 Meat Outlet/Armata’s, Charlie Arment Trucking, Elegant Affairs, H. P. Hood, Michael’s Party Rentals, Republic Services, Springfield Water and Sewer Commission, United Tractor Trailer School, City of Springfield, and many others.

Star Spangled Springfield has been a celebration of the country’s independence and a July 4th tradition since 1991.  MassMutual has been the lead sponsor since 2006.
