Mayor Sarno held the City of Springfield’s first COVID-19 situational update meeting on March 16, 2020, after declaring a state of emergency in the City of Springfield on March 13, 2020.
Mayor Sarno initially started holding the weekly COVID-19 situational update meetings to help address the concerns from the onset of the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic. Mayor Sarno joined with his dedicated team of Cabinet Heads, who are tested and true, along with our local medical experts and professionals including Dr. Mark Keroack, President and CEO of Baystate Health, Dr. Robert Roose, Chief Medical Officer and Regional Chief, Addiction Medicine and Recovery Services for Mercy Medical, and Patrick Leonardo, Operations Manager for AMR, to provide situation updates on the precautionary measures and initiatives being taken to maintain public health and safety. These update meetings provided clarity on what the City of Springfield, Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the CDC were advising and doing to help mitigate the community spread of the virus.
Mayor Sarno states, “First, I want to thank my dedicated team from Cabinet Heads down to our rank-and-file and their families, who have been tested and true. I especially want to recognize Health and Human Services Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris, who has worked tirelessly on behalf of our residents and business community. I truly appreciate and deeply thank Dr. Mark Keroack and Dr. Robert Roose for their leadership and expertise throughout this pandemic. Since day one they have been a vital and important partner to help our community and bring awareness for our residents. I also want to recognize Patrick Pickering and Patrick Leonardo of AMR who have gone above and beyond in partnering with the city on a number of initiatives throughout this pandemic.”

Vital core services continued,” Mayor Sarno added. “Through stable and strong leadership with compassion, we were able to get through this together as one. I cannot thank our residents and business community enough for their continued patience and vigilance.
