Mayor Sarno, and State and City Officials Recognized Pope Francis Boys Hockey Team on Winning USA Hockey DI National Championship

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno joined with Ward 2 City Councilor Attorney Michael Fenton, Ward 4 City Councilor Malo Brown, Ward 7 City Councilor Tim Allen, and State Representatives Bud Williams, Angelo J. Puppolo, and Brian Ashe in recognizing the Pope Francis Boys Hockey Team on winning the USA Hockey Division I National Championship.

The Pope Francis Preparatory School Boys Hockey Team, “Springfield Cardinals”, defeated New Trier High School (Illinois) 3-0 to win the USA Hockey Division I High School National Championship in Omaha, Nebraska on April 19, 2021.  During the USA Hockey National Championship run, the “Cardinals” dominated the competition outscoring their opponents 51-5.

Mayor Sarno presented Coach Brian Foley with a proclamation declaring Thursday, April 29, 2021 as “Pope Francis Boys Hockey Day” in the City of Springfield.  Mayor Sarno also issued mayoral citation to all the hockey coaches and players.

In addition, State Representatives Ashe, Puppolo and Williams presented a proclamation from the Commonwealth House of Representatives to the team.  City Councilors Allen, Brown and Fenton also presented a citation from the City Council honoring the team.

Mayor Sarno stated, “Congratulations to Coach Foley and our Pope Francis Boys Hockey Team on a historic run to win the USA Hockey D1 National Championship – way to go!  Wishing the coaches, players, teachers, staff, and families continued success both on and off the ice.  We are all proud of you – what an incredible performance.”
