Mayor Sarno Joined with AMR for Earn While You Learn Announcement

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno joined with American Medical Response Northeast Regional Director Patrick Pickering and AMR officials at the AMR COVID-19 testing site at the Eastfield Mall to announce that applications for the fifth Earn While You Learn Academy is now open.

First launched in August 2019, AMR's award-winning Earn While You Learn program is designed to make an easier transition for those wanting to become Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) professionals.  Participants are hired as employees and compensated while attending AMR’s EMT-Basic certification course.  Upon successful completion of the program and obtaining their state certification, participants are promoted to EMT-B with a commensurate pay increase.

Mayor Sarno stated, “I am very appreciative of AMR’s continued belief, support, and investment in our Springfield.  This continues to be what my administration is all about – creating more jobs for our residents and their families.  In addition, I am truly grateful to AMR’s unyielding support and partnership, especially during the ongoing COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic.”

Two AMR employees who previously graduated from the Earn While You Learn program were on hand and spoke on what the program meant to them and their career goals and eventually working up the ladder to potentially a supervisor position.  One of the graduates is now enrolled in medic school to become a paramedic.
