Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Fire Commissioner BJ Calvi joined with Bishop William D. Byrne and other local faith and community leaders today to recognize Child Abuse Prevention Month. The event included a Prayer Service and raising of the Children’s Memorial Flag outside Saint Michael’s Cathedral in Springfield.
Mayor Sarno stated, “First, I want to thank and commend the survivors of abuse for sharing their stories – your courage and strength are powerful forces of good in preventing such abuse from happening again. I also applaud Bishop Byrne for his commitment to bringing healing and understanding to our community – now more than ever is this needed. This flag honors the memory of every child that was tragically lost to violence and helps to raise public awareness about violence against our children and how important it is to report abuse when see it or suspect it.”
