Mayor Sarno and Representatives from the Greek Cultural Center and St. George Cathedral Celebrate Greek Independence Day Bicentennial

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno joined with Father Dionysios Koulianos, Dean of St. George Cathedral, Liza Pappas, and representatives from the Greek Cultural Center and St. George Cathedral today to celebrate Greek Independence Day with a flag raising ceremony.  Mayor Sarno presented a proclamation for the occasion declaring March 25, 2021 as Bicentennial Greek Independence Day in the City of Springfield. 

Also in attendance for the celebration was State Representative Angelo Puppolo, State Senator John Velis, Hampden County Register of Probate Rosemary Saccomani, Springfield City Councilor Kateri Walsh, Agawam City Councilor George Bitzas, and Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood.

Mayor Sarno stated, “I am proud to stand with our Greek residents as we celebrate the flag raising ceremony honoring the Bicentennial of Greek Independence on Thursday, March 25, 2021.  This year marks 200 years of freedom of the Greek Nation.  I want to thank Father Dionysios Koulianos, Dean of St. George Cathedral, Liza Pappas the Bicentennial Greek Independence Flag raising coordinator, and everyone from the Greek Cultural Center and St. George Cathedral for their continued strength, belief and investment in our City.  Our beloved Springfield is richer because of our residents representing the Greek faith, culture and heritage.”
