Mayor Sarno and City Officials Meet with Representatives from Covanta

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, City Councilors Attorney Michael Fenton and Marcus Williams joined with city officials and representatives from Covanta to discuss the recent fire incident that occurred at their landfill at Bondi’s Island and what remedies would be taken to assure that this does not happen again.

Mayor Sarno stated, “I want to thank the officials from Covanta for meeting with me and my city team as a follow up to our conversations regarding the fire incident at their landfill at Bondi’s Island.  The meeting helped to clarify the situation and dispel some of the rumors, which were floating out there.  In addition, we continued our dialogue on what measures could be taken to assure that this incident does not happen again and reimbursement on the cost incurred in responding to this incident.  I also want to thank Councilors Fenton and Williams for attending this meeting so that they could have their questions answered by Covanta.  We will await the review from the DEP and the state Fire Marshall of the incident.  Once again, I am very appreciative of the brave and dedicated efforts from the firefighters from the multiple departments that responded to this incident.”

Also in attendance were Department of Public Works Director Chris Cignoli, Law Department Attorneys Bruce Leiter and Robert Shewchuk, and Chief of Staff Tom Ashe.
