Springfield DPW Announces Bondi's Island Landfill Will Be Closed Friday and Saturday Due to Fire

The City of Springfield Department of Public Works has announced that due to a large brush fire at the Bondi’s Island Landfill, the landfill will not be open to accept yard waste drop off from residents on Friday, October 16, 2020 and Saturday, October 17, 2020.

The landfill should be reopened for residents on Monday, October 19, 2020.

Residents may continue to experience the presence of smoke, which may affect the air quality throughout the region, due to the brush fire from the Bondi’s Island landfill. The City along with the appropriate state agencies will continue to monitor the air quality from this incident. It is recommended that residents with any respiratory and health concerns stay inside and keep their windows closed due to the possibility of the smoke being blown across the region by the winds.

In addition, Mayor Domenic J. Sarno viewed the site late Thursday afternoon and was concerned about the heavy smoke and air quality.  He was also concerned for the residents and businesses in the Springfield and adjacent area towns and for the safety of the firefighters who were battling the blaze.

Mayor Sarno has requested that DPW Director Chris Cignoli, Fire Commissioner BJ Calvi, and City Solicitor Attorney Ed Pikula contact Covanta, which is responsible for this property, for a review and explanation of what occurred and what they are going to do to quell this situation ASAP and just as important that this incident doesn't happen again.

The City of Springfield thanks our residents for their patience and understanding.  Photo credited to Fire Commissioner BJ Calvi, Video credited to DPW Director Chris Cignoli.
