Springfield Public Schools to Pause All Athletic Events and Practices for Fall Sports for Two Weeks

The Springfield Public Schools in consultation with the state Department of Public Health, City of Springfield Health and Human Services Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris and adhering to the City of Springfield’s Health and Human Services COVID-19 public health and safety protocols, have temporarily paused all athletic events and practices for fall sports for two weeks, effective immediately, due to a confirmed COVID-19 Coronavirus case from a student athlete.

This action is taken out of an abundance of caution to help mitigate the community spread of the Coronavirus as the City of Springfield is listed as a “Red” / High-Risk community.

In addition, the student athlete and those who have had direct exposure will be contacted directly and instructed to self-quarantine for two weeks.

The Springfield Public Schools will also notify all student athletes and their families of the positive COVID-19 case and what public health and safety measures the district is taking.  As the positive COVID-19 case is pertaining to a student athlete, the school and fall sport involved is confidential and will not be disclosed as to protect the student’s identity.

The City of Springfield continues to stress the importance for all residents to practice healthy hygiene and to follow and adhere to all public health and safety protocols and measures.
