City of Springfield Raises Italian Flag for Italian Heritage Month

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and State Representative Carlos Gonzalez joined with Paul Picknelly, Joseph DeCaro the Deputy Director of Veteran Affairs for the City of Springfield, and members of the Italian Cultural Center of Western Massachusetts including Co-Presidents Charlie Becker and Marcia Capuano, and residents from our South End neighborhood to raise the Italian Flag and to celebrate Italian Heritage Month.

Mayor Sarno presented a proclamation declaring the month of October 2020 as Italian Heritage Month in the City of Springfield.

In addition, Paul Picknelly, the Italian Consulate representative for the Springfield area announced that soon the Consulate would be opening a Springfield office so that individuals will not have to travel to Boston.  Mayor Sarno expressed his thanks and appreciation to Mr. Picknelly for his continued efforts advocating on behalf of all Italian-Americans in Western Massachusetts and beyond.

Mayor Sarno stated, “Being first generation Italian-American, this ceremony is very special to me.  Like many immigrants, when Italian-Americans immigrated to America they faced numerous difficulties and challenges.  They took any menial jobs and toiled to be able to provide for themselves and their families.  It is because of our forefathers and mothers perseverance and efforts that generations to follow have and continue to lead in all walks of life, whether in Springfield, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the United States of America.  I’m so proud to be an Italian-American and live our motto of ‘Family, Faith, and Food’!”
