Mayor Sarno Joined with City, State and Neighborhood Officials in Support of North End Pedestrian Underpass Project

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno joined with Director of Capital Asset Construction Peter Garvey; Director of DPW Chris Cignoli; City Councilors Adam Gomez and Jesse Lederman; School Committee Member Maria Perez; State Representative Carlos Gonzalez; State Senator James Welch; Governor Baker’s Western Massachusetts Director Patrick Carnevale;  MassDOT District 2 Director Peter Cavicchi; Director of New North Citizens Council Jose Claudio; and other city, state and neighborhood officials in support of the North End Pedestrian Underpass project.

The North End Pedestrian Underpass project is a MassDOT project that has been in the works for years.  Residents, elected officials and representatives from the neighborhood council notified the Mayor and his administration of the need for a pedestrian pass to provide safe passage and help connect the two sections of the North End and Brightwood neighborhoods (Birnie Ave and Plainfield Street) that is separated by the railroad tracks.  After a thorough review of the issue and a study, the Commonwealth and the City adopted the current project of building a pedestrian underpass.  The $6.5 million project will create a new safe and fully accessible crossing for pedestrians.
