Mayor Sarno Urges City Council to Act on Fireworks Enforcement Special Home Rule Legislation ASAP

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno states he was surprised and disappointed in the City Council sending to committee his fireworks enforcement special home rule legislation to address public safety and quality of life issues.

Mayor Sarno stated, “I urge the City Council to pass this legislation with ‘teeth’ in it to combat the barrages of illegal fireworks we all had to endure these past months because it is meaningful and enforceable.”

“With many cities and towns in Massachusetts having been negatively impacted with these illegal fireworks, timing for this home rule legislation could not have been better.  Again, I urge our City Council to move on this ASAP, not for me, but more importantly out of respect to our residents, especially our senior citizens, veterans with PTSD, families with babies and young children, pet owners, and our business community,” Mayor Sarno added.  “My home rule legislation would get the offenders attention, much as was done with parking tickets and excise tax scofflaws, because if not paid they can’t get and/or renew their license, registration, permits, etc., - now you have teeth in it and a deterrence model too – that will make them think twice.”
