Central High School Graduate to Become New Treasurer/Collector

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno and Chief Administrative and Financial Officer (CAFO) TJ Plante have announced that under the Acts of  2008 Chapter 468, Christopher Caputo of Springfield has been appointed as the City of Springfield’s new Treasurer/Collector.

Stephen J. Lonergan, who has served as the City Treasurer/Collector since 2010, has accepted the position of Director of Municipal Finance/Town Accountant for the Town of East Longmeadow.

Caputo, a life-long Springfield resident and 2005 graduate of Central High School, has served as the City of Westfield’s Auditor since 2019.  Previously, he served as an Assistant Accountant for the Town of Longmeadow, and as a Financial Analysis and Accountant for the City of Springfield.  Caputo is a graduate of Bentley University and holds a B.S. in Finance.  He is also a former President and member of the East Forest Park Civic Association.

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno stated, “I have full confidence in the training, experience and common sense attributes Chris brings to the table.  As a Springfield Central High School graduate, he was able to cut his teeth in finance with our City government starting as an intern.  I want to thank outgoing Treasurer/Collector Steve Lonergan for his dedicated years of service to our city and our residents.  It is bittersweet to lose someone of his caliber, but he had a great opportunity and he will be missed.  I am looking forward to bringing Chris on board and I have full confidence that he will hit the ground running and continue the customer service and business focus approach of this office.”

CAFO Plante added, “First, I want to thank Stephen Lonergan for his service to our finance team, the City and our residents.  I wish him continued success in all of his future endeavors.  It is good to have Chris Caputo back with the City of Springfield.  These are very difficult positions to fill throughout the Commonwealth.  Chris has the skills, training, education and pedigree to be successful in this role.”

Treasurer/Collector Lonergan stated, “I would like to thank Mayor Sarno for the opportunity to serve the City of Springfield, my hometown, as Treasurer/Collector for the past ten years.  It has been my pleasure and honor to do so.  As I move to this new chapter of my career, I look forward to facing new and exciting opportunities in East Longmeadow.”

Chris Caputo stated, “I am very flattered of Mayor Sarno and CAFO Plante for their confidence in my abilities and I look forward to working with the staff of the Treasurer and Collector’s office, the city’s finance team, and our residents.  It is good to be back home working for the city I love.”

Caputo was offered the Finance Director/Treasurer position for the City of Marlborough but choose the Treasurer/Collector position in his hometown.

Lonergan’s last day will be July 2, 2020.  Caputo will start July 6, 2020.
