Mayor Sarno Submits Comments to Springfield Water and Sewer Commissions Proposed FY21 Budget

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno today submitted comments to the Springfield Water and Sewer Commission on their proposed FY21 budget.

On May 1st, the Springfield Water and Sewer Commission issued their proposed FY21 budget which included a 16.9% rate increase.  On May 8th, the Mayor issued a letter to the editor asking the Commission to respectfully review their purposed rate increase and the discount for senior citizens.  On May 15th, the Commission, hearing the Mayor’s concerns and also showing data of better than projected usage from the April billing cycle issued a revision to their proposed FY21 budget which should have a better and positive impact on the final rate recommendations.  In addition, the Commission adopted an increase to the discount for senior citizens and disabled veterans.

Mayor Sarno stated, “While meeting with Executive Director Josh Schimmel today, I hand delivered to him my official comments for the Springfield Water and Sewer Commissions proposed FY21 budget.  Although I share his and the Board of Commissioners concerns for continuing to invest and improve our water and sewer infrastructure, which is top notch in the nation.  We must continue to strike a delicate balance between assuring that our infrastructure improvement and maintenance needs are met, while being mindful of the surreal and extraordinary times we find ourselves in, especially to our ratepayers – our residents and business community.”

Mayor Sarno’s comments were also submitted to the Springfield Water and Sewer Commission via their public email address at info@waterandsewer.org.
