Mayor Domenic J. Sarno is issuing a call to all City of Springfield residents and businesses to take a moment and pause this Monday, June 1, 2020 at 4:38 p.m., the time the tornado touched down in Springfield.
In a letter dated Wednesday, May 27, 2020 to the City’s spiritual institutions, Mayor Sarno has asked for them to chime their bells on Monday at 4:38 p.m. to mark the beginning of the tornado’s 6.2 mile long scar through the City of Springfield.
Commenting on the ninth anniversary of the June 1, 2011 tornado, Mayor Sarno stated, “As we continue to work together to defeat this COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic, now more than ever, I want to take a moment to pause and reflect on our ability as a city to join together and work so diligently on making our city whole again. It has been a long and arduous recovery process, but the resiliency of the entire City of Springfield has shone through time and time again.”
“Even now, with the coronavirus pandemic sweeping our nation and the world, our residents and business community continues to rally together to help mitigate the community spread of the virus. I am truly humbled to see the heartfelt responses from our Springfield community during these states of emergencies. The compassion and support we have seen during these challenging times is a testament to the patience, strength and fortitude of our City of Springfield and we all should be proud,” Mayor Sarno added.
