Governor Baker Issues New Order on COVID-19 Essential Services

Governor Charlie Baker issued an emergency order requiring all businesses and organizations that do not provide “COVID-19 Essential Services” to close their physical workplaces and facilities to workers, customers and the public as of Tuesday, March 24th at noon until Tuesday, April 7th at noon. These businesses are encouraged to continue operations remotely.

The City of Springfield will adhere to the Governor's order of closing all non-essential businesses and organizations in the city.  These businesses are encouraged to continue operations remotely.

The Order also prohibits the gatherings of more than 10 people.  The City will also adhere to this order and limit gatherings in the city to no more than 10 people.  Previous the city limited gatherings of no more than 25.    

The Governor also issued an Advisory asking people to avoid any non-essential traveling and to stay at home.  The City of Springfield echos the Governor's advisory and is asking all Springfield residents to try and avoid any unnecessary and non-essential travel.  

The Governor has issued an essential services list which includes the following: 

  • Healthcare, public health, human services, pharmacies  
  • Law enforcement, public safety, first responders
  • Food service including grocery stores, convenience stores, famer’s markets, delivery and take-out food service,
  • Energy services such as petroleum, natural gas, and steam workers
  • Utilities and public works such as water, sewer, and trash collection
  • Transportation services
  • Communications and information technology, financial services, and critical manufacturing
