Arrest Made after 9-11 Monument is Vandalized

Springfield Police Officers, after an investigation by our Detective Bureau under the direction of Captain Trent Duda, arrest James Carroll for vandalizing the 9-11 Monument in Riverfront Park.

“It was heartbreaking to see the damage done to this beautiful monument and worth the effort from our Detective Bureau, Officers and Crime Analysts to bring the person responsible for this horrific act to justice,” said Acting Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood.

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno stated, “I am very appreciative of Acting Commissioner Clapprood and our men and women in blue’s quick work to apprehend this most disrespectful individual who had the audacity to desecrate this hallowed memorial that pays tribute to those first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice to save others on September 11th.”

On Sunday morning, Springfield Police Officers received information that the 9-11 Monument in Riverfront Park had been vandalized.  Officers in the C3 Metro Unit responded to the Park and observed the damage.  The words, “Liars”, “Murder 911 Scam” and “911 Scam” had been scratched into various spots on the monuments rear panels. Detectives under the direction of Captain Trent Duda began investigating and crime analysts in the Springfield Police Department’s R-TAC Unit began reviewing video.  At this point it was unclear when this vandalism occurred.

Crime Analysts reviewed hours of video and on Tuesday September 10th analysts located a subject defacing the monument at approximately 2:30am on Wednesday September 4th.  A Springfield Police Officer immediately was able to positively identify the suspect as Mr. James Carroll.  Detectives had requested an arrest warrant on September 11th and on Wednesday night at approximately 10:30pm Officers in the Metro Unit located and arrested Mr. Carroll in Sterns Square.  The cost to repair the damage is unknown at this point.

59 year old James Carroll of Leyfred Terrace is charged with:

  • Defacement of Real or Personal Property

Acting Commissioner Clapprood held a media availability (Thursday) at 1:15pm at 130 Pearl Street.
